Byzantine Philippi. An overview of the urban landscape from the archaeological sources (9th-12th c.)
Philippes byzantine.
Identifying the fortifications located in the Western part of the ancient urbain area as the defences of the Byzantine city leads to a reexamination of the whole site’s organization between the 9th and the 12th c. while reinterpretating the epigraphic evidence. The sparse archaeological data from this period known hitherto, above all the graveyards occupying the remains of the great Early Christian basilicas, can be understood as the suburbs of the Middle Byzantine city although they are located inside the Ancient city walls.
