LA POLÍTICA DE LOS PARTIDOS: NOTICIAS DE LAS GUERRAS EUROPEAS EN PORTUGAL EN LA PRIMERA MITAD DEL SIGLO XVIII

This articles studies the reception of foreign news in Portugal in the first half of the XVIIIth century. Literary sources, newsletters and the Lisbon Gazette (Gazeta de Lisboa) give us evidence of an increasing interest for international military and diplomatic news in the Portuguese information market of the time. This interest was characterized by a strong ideological commitment of readers to information, which was perceived as a extension of the diplomatic positions of the Portuguese monarchy. Such a partisan use of information was the object of a major contradiction: on the one hand, it was publicly criticised as a source of human discord and disruption in social harmony. On the other hand, it was nurtured through regular operations of news exchange and commentary, permanently affected by political bias. In the end of the article, an explanation for this contradiction is provided, stressing the active roles played by the different media (particularily print and manuscript) in the segmentation of the market and the audience of news.

Basado en fuentes literarias, epistolares y en la Gazeta de Lisboa, este artículo estudia la ideología que acompaña la recepción de noticias internacionales en el Portugal de la primera mitad del siglo XVIII. Se subrayan dos aspectos principales: por una parte, se verifica una fuerte resistencia de los redactores de información manuscrita y impresa a un aumento del abanico social de lectores de noticias de gacetas y pliegos relacionados con los sucesos militares europeos de la época; por otra parte, redactores y lectores de noticias participan en un movimiento general de implicación política con las noticias, leídas como una prolongación de los alineamientos externos de la diplomacia de la monarquía portuguesa. Una contradicción fundamental emerge, entre la condena moral del interés por la información y el uso político de las noticias al servicio de parcialidades de corte. Al final, se propone una clave de interpretación para explicar tal contradicción, basada en la diferencia – real o imaginada – de los auditorios de noticias impresas y manuscritas.
