Biomechanical behavior of porcine intervertebral disc in finite deformation

Résumé

Intervertebral disc (IVD) mechanical properties are altered with its degeneration progress. The degradation of these properties is linked to a modification of the extracellular matrix (ECM) composition and nutrients distribution within the disc. Nutrients are transported by diffusion in the fluid phase due to the non-vascularization of the media. Under load, IVD undergoes several changes in its water content which have an important effect in the nutrient distribution. In order to determine the relation between mechanical response and nutrients distribution, a biphasic swelling model of the IVD is developed. In this model, finite deformation and nutrients diffusion are taken into account. Using experimental data and an optimization method, the goal of this work is first to identify the parameters of the mechanical model. The modeling is then validated comparing with literature results.
