The systematic position of Middle Pleistocene ground voles Microtus (Terricola) Fatio, 1867 (Arvicolinae, Rodentia) at Vergranne (Franche-Comté, France).

Résumé

This odontometrical study of the first lower molar of the vole species Microtus vergrannensis from the Middle Pleistocene Vergranne karst filling (Franche-Comté, France) specifies the criteria that characterise M. vergrannensis with regard to the present-day species M. subterraneus and M. multiplex and the Cromerian species M. arvalidens. The findings suggest that M. vergrannensis may have derived from M. arvalidens during the Middle Pleistocene.
