A system-by-design approach for the synthesis of metamaterial printed WAIMs

Résumé

The design of a wide-angle impedance matching(WAIM) layer based on a metasurface structure is proposed tomitigate reflection issues for waveguide-fed planar phasedarrays. To achieve this goal, the synthesis problem is formulatedas a System-by-Design one where the degrees of freedom arerepresented by the geometry of the metasurface unit cells, andthe objective is the minimization of antenna input reflectionscaused by impedance mismatching when the array is steered. Theproposed solution technique is based on the combination ofelementary functional blocks aimed at (i) exploring the searchspace, (ii) analyzing the resulting metasurface structure to deducethe equivalent permittivity/permeability tensors, (iii) computingthe phased array response, and (iv) linking the obtained resultwith the problem constraints and objectives to determine theassociated cost function. A preliminary numerical validation isillustrated to assess the effectiveness and flexibility of theproposed synthesis strategy.
