Abstract : This study sets out to identify and understand behaviours with respect to the drop-out andcontinuation of students attending Licentiate courses in Sciences with a Qualification inMathematics and in Mathematics, both at CFP/UFCG, Cajazeiras campus. 22 students ofthe courses mentioned above took part in this study. The data collection instrument was aquestionnaire. The purpose of the questionnaire was to obtain underlying reasons for theperformance of these students: the students’ self-evaluation of their performances beforeand during the first periods of the Licentiate courses. Data were analysed based onStatistical Implicative Analysis (SIA) approach using CHIC (Cohesive HierarchicalImplicative Classification) software. The analysis made of the data modelled with CHICenabled a deeper understanding of the phenomena under study to be obtained. Someimportant relationships were revealed such as the influence of the university on thestudents' perception of failure on the course.
