This article deals with the speech act of explaining and both its potentially positive and negative interpretations. Building upon previous work within the framework of the Semantics of Argumentative Possibilities, the results of a study of 26 native French speakers are looked at, concluding that this speech act is generally perceived as positive by the population considered.
