Quel cadre épistémologique pour une science de l'interaction homme-machine ?

Abstract : Since the birth of the discipline, human-machine interaction is crossed by a tension between a theory of human-computer systems relations and a practice that aims at developing new interactive systems. Unfortunately, HMI has not yet succeeded in establishing a clear link between the two. In this paper we propose to tackle this difficulty through an epistemological contribution. We start by an examination of the computational paradigm, which is, according to our view, the theoretical framework of many theories in HMI. Then, we recall a number of criticisms that have been addressed to this paradigm from several disciplines to highlight its limitations and the need for its replacement. Finally, we propose a new characterization of the science of the HMI and we outline a new structuring framework based on a process-oriented ontology.
