Localisation et dynamiques de concentration des productions animales en Europe : état des lieux et facteurs explicatifs

Abstract : This article presents the evolution since 2000 of the location of livestock products (milk, cattle, pigs, poultry) in the European Union. Using the latest statistical data available at fine geographic level, an analysis is conducted on the geographical concentration process and on the specialization of productive territories. The forces that influence these processes are not new and have been the subject of many studies by economists. They mainly concern the comparative advantages, economies of scale and agglomeration, the quality of industrial and commercial structure. The environmental standards and rural development measures of the CAP constitute a lever to counteract the strengthening animal density. Nevertheless their influence is often less important than the forces described above. An analysis of the co-location of animal production shows that the areas with high density frequently associate dairy cows, pigs and poultry.
