La diversité des prairies : caractérisation agronomique et points de vue d'éleveurs dans différents systèmes de production

Abstract : The agronomic characterization of grassland diversity leads to assessing both their forage and environmental services. Do farmers agree with the results of this assessment? The objective of the present study, performed in amount aneous area of the Massif Central (« Valprai » PSDR project), was to analyze the relationships between the farmers’ point of view on diversity and the agronomic characterization within and between-plots. Surveys were performed on 17 farms to gather the criteria used by farmers to describe the grassland diversity at the farm level and to analyze what interest, if any, they consider to this diversity. The agronomic characterization was based on floristic analyses done in 106 permanent grassland plots, taking into account the production system, management and the altitude of the plots. Soils were also characterized using surveys and sample analysis from 4 of the 17farms. There was a high correlation between the description made by farmers and sample analyses concerning the soils, which could lead to proposing a quick and simple method avoiding soil sampling. Three groups of grasslands were obtained using the agronomic characterization, different in their botanical composition and diversity level. These 3 groups were linked to altitude and production systems. In mixed systems, diversity was greater, especially compared to specialized dairy systems. Farmers used 21 different criteria to describe the diversity of grasslands on their farm, often linked to structural constraints. Two groups of farmers could be distinguished according to the added value they mention to the diversity of grasslands, this added-value being more explicit for farmers managing mixed systems. Our results show that mixed systems, combining diversity of both animals and resources, contribute to maintaining and valorizing the grassland biodiversity at the territory level.
