This chapter questions the position of places into the process of globalization. It stresses that we need to go beyond a univocal dialectic between local and global scales to understand the multiplicity of spatial scales and relations between actors building the place and its moorings. Through the study of four important airport places highly inserted into the globalized flows, it shows the ability of places engaged into globalization to symbolize collective territorialities and their ambiguities, between inclusion and exclusion. But it highlights as well that such places are a long way from being unpindownable and unsituated and involve a total territorial experience which needs to be taken seriously. It helps us indeed to reveal the simultaneity of territorial moorings in one place, the concomitancy of this heterogeneity of scales and collectives. Beyond the juxtaposition of territorialities, their relative position has drawn little attention, while it allows us to better understand the lability and the dynamic dimension of territorialisations at stake as well as the agency of every actor engaged.

Ce chapitre interroge la place des lieux dans la mondialisation. Il souligne l’importance de dépasser l’approche dialectique univoque entre échelle locale et échelle globale pour appréhender toute la multiplicité d’échelles spatiales, de relations entre acteurs et partant d’ancrages qui font le lieu. A travers l’analyse de quatre grands aéroports très insérés dans les relations mondialisées, il met en évidence la capacité des lieux engagés dans la mondialisation à symboliser des territorialités collectives dans toute leur ambiguïté, entre inclusion et exclusion. Mais il montre également que de tels lieux, loin d’être insituables, engagent une expérience territoriale totale qui est à prendre au sérieux, car elle permet de révéler la simultanéité des ancrages territoriaux en un lieu, la concomitance de cette hétérogénéité d’échelles et de collectifs. Alors que celle-ci n’a guère retenu l’attention dans l’analyse des lieux, elle permet pourtant de saisir, notamment en réinvestissant divers travaux des postcolonial studies, la labilité et la dimension dynamique des territorialisations à l’œuvre dans ces lieux processus, donc de prêter attention à la capacité d’action de chacun des acteurs en présence.
