Nouveaux éléments sur la vie de Louis D’Hervelois de Caix (1677 – 1759).

Abstract : This paper gives the first reliable facts on the life on Louis d’Hervelois de Caix (1677-1759), one of the last masters of the viola da gamba French school. Many sources can now show some light on his origins in Picardy, his apprenticeship and his first years in Paris, where he seems to have been protected by his uncle Louis de Caix, a priest in the Sainte-Chapelle. His family, his real estates and financial transactions, his will and heritage are also described. The music prints he published are reviewed, as the titles of his instrumental works and the identity of some students and dedications. He appears to be a productive and independent musician, who never worked for any noble house. Many archival sources help us to draw a good portrait of him : a wise and active man, working hard to increase his fortune and the wealth of his family.
