Abstract : Traditional maps are more and more often complemented by a representation based on choremes. The choice of the geome- trical shape of the pattern and its links with geographical reality are an essential step in the process of simplification. Beyond the mere geographical description of facts, choremes are perfectly well suited to a systematic reflec- tion. Here they make it possible to show oppo- sitions as well as similarities in the spatial organisations of Reunion Island and Gua- deloupe. They contribute therefore to throwing into light the three stages of the conflict over coastal land use on small tropical islands
