Lanthanides in Extended Molecular Networks

Résumé

In the early stages of molecular magnetism, interest was focussed on the realization of bulk magnets based on molecular networks. This chapter has made a distinction between isotropic, mainly Gd3+ , and anisotropic lanthanide-based molecular networks. In the first case, 1D materials exhibit a peculiar magnetic behaviour only in a restricted class of compounds comprising nitronyl-nitroxide radicals. The ‘ferrimagnetic’ approach, introduced by Kahn, was successively extended to lanthanide ions and in particular to Gd3+ because the absence of a significant orbital contribution strongly simplified the analysis of the magnetic properties. The aim here is to provide some basic concepts of the phenomenon and to introduce some selected examples of single-chain magnets (SCMs) based on lanthanide ions. It also describes chains with a sole lanthanide ion as spin carrier. 3d-4f and 3d-3d'-4f heterometallic chains follow. Finally, chains comprising lanthanide and radical ligands conclude this chapter.
