This article deals with the construction of the “Beethovenian appropriation field” as a socio-cultural event during the French-German musical scene in the 19th century. This article can be seen in the light of a new theory of the “field of tension” and also works with some of Bourdieu’s theories. My argument will be based on the historical and cultural background of the field in its specificity and perpetual re-composition due to the internationalisation of social space. This study of mediation in the “Beethovenian appropriation field” will also lead to a transcultural approach to the social history of music.
