Model Free Control for Type-1 Diabetes: A Fasting-Phase Study

Résumé

In this work the problem of regulating glycemia of Type-1 Diabetes(T1D) is investigated. Model-free control (Intelligent PID or iPID) is employed for the first time as a control algorithm to close the loop of the artificial pancreas. It is tested in silico employing a novel long-term model of the glucose-insulin dynamics of T1D evaluated on clinical data of several patients from two University-hospital centers in France. Among closed-loop glycemia regulation studies, many have focused on stabilizing overnight/fasting glycemia due to the risk of overnight hypoglycemia. Thus, the rst concern is to test iPID control on virtual patients during overnight and fasting (non-glucidic regime) phase. Changing only one control parameter from one patient to another, the results show that iPID outperformed the existing open-loop Functional Insulin Therapy (FIT) based control without hypoglycemic risk.
