Modeling Human Movement for 3D Manipulation Task

Abstract : Fitts' popular model has been widely adopted in numerous research areas, including kinematics, human factors, and human-computer interaction. Mechanical assembly consists of joining two or more components together. The manual assembly task includes many activities necessary to obtain the complete product, this occurs during the product manufacture or its maintenance. An assembly task may be divided into six basic activities such as reach, select, grasp, move, position, and secure. Activities such as "reach" and "move" are generated by biomechanics of body motions including human factors principles. The objective of the research reported in this paper is to investigate if Fitts’ law can be adopted as a model to estimate the assembly time in virtual environment. The experimental work carried out focused on the validation of Fitts’ model for the manipulation of virtual cylindrical parts in the assembly operation. The initial results of this work showed that Fitts’ law can be applied for the manipulation of cylindrical objects in assembly operation.
