Les possédées de Lodi. Parcours de deux témoignages exceptionnels sur l'exorcisme au XIIe siècle

Abstract : One case of possession, which occurred in Lodi in 1173, resulted in two separate stories. The first, ordered by the Bishop of Lodi, has been published and is widely known. It is more surprising to discover a second account of the same case in the Collectaneum Clarevallense, a collection of exempla written at Clairvaux shortly before 1181, whose edition was published in 2005. The comparison of the two versions supplies many interesting informations : it allows to reconstruct the path followed by the story between Lodi and Clairvaux; it illustrates the principles governing the rewriting of the text by a Cistercian monk ; it reveals an ambiguous vision of the possessed women, both victims of the devil and teachers of truth for the Church. Finally and most importantly, an addition made in the clarevallien story contains the denunciation of a heretical group in Milan by the possessed woman. This reflects the link that was being established in the spirit of the Cistercians between demonic possession and heresy. This assimilation, repeatedly attested in Collectaneum Clarevallense, implies that the fight against heresy is nothing but a kind of exorcism.
