L'hypermobilité : une figure introuvable ? Représentations dominantes et pratiques de déplacement à l'aune des aéroports

Abstract : This paper places into question the notion of hypermobility as a categorical figure shaping socially dominant representations of mobilities. It draws on a field work combining direct and participant observation as well as interviews with passengers of three main international passing places: Paris Charles-De-Gaulle, Amsterdam Schiphol and Frankfurt-am-Main airports. It shows that dominant representations conveyed by these places showcase a hypermobile figure of mobility and confronts it with the effective practices of passengers. It focuses on an encompassing analysis of the activities undertaken by travellers at the airport to stress that such situated activities are an insightful object of study for a better understanding of overall mobilities and social life of individuals. This confrontation leads to a critical understanding of the hypermobile figure as taking part of a social imagination of mobility which prevents to fully envision the reality of mobile experiences. This paper therefore pleads for questioning the use of archetypical categorical figures of mobility in the field of mobilities and for thinking mobile categorizations anew.
