DU VERBE ACTIF AU VERBE TRANSITIF: TRANSITIVITE ET COMPLEMENTATION DANS LES GRAMMAIRES FRANÇAISES, 1660-1863

The question we propose to examine in this contribution is the following: How did the “active verb” category in French grammar, which was inherited from Latin grammar, be¬come the “transitive verb” category? The definition of the active verb is based in fact on the superposition of two characteristics: the semantics of the action and the direct construction. The history of the emergence of the category of the transitive verb results from a process of separation of these criteria realized over the long term in line with the emergence of the notion of the complement.

La question que nous proposons d’examiner dans cette contribution est la suivante : comment est-on passé, dans la grammaire française, de la catégorie de « verbe actif », héritée de la grammaire latine, à celle de « verbe transitif »? La définition du verbe actif repose en effet sur la superposition de deux caractéristiques : le sémantisme de l’action et la construction directe. L’histoire de l’émergence de la catégorie de verbe « transitif » résulte d’un processus de séparation de ces critères, qui se réalise dans la longue durée, en lien avec l’émergence de la notion de complément.
