Creation of Virtual Sound Scenes Using Wave Field Synthesis

Résumé

Wave Field Synthesis (WFS) is a promising rendering technique for creation and reproduction of sonic spaces with highly demanding performances on the spatial content. The present paper describes the main features and attended perceptual performances of WFS in the context of sound scene creation. The WFS is well suited for the content coding approach such as MPEG-4 and is compatible with the main room description models that can be used by sound engineers for mixing and manipulating the scene. The global architecture of a rendering system, the principles of its equalization procedure and associated spatial synthesis software developed in the European CARROUSO project are described.
