Towards an analysis of interaction in sound generating systems

Résumé

The creation of an interactive system depends on various expertises. In fact, artists usually collaborate with engineers and technicians who design and implement the final system. Therefore, the same interactive system can be viewed, and evaluated, from different perspectives. In this paper we consider two main perspectives: the system design and the semantical points of view. The system design perspective encompasses the discussion of topics such as: choice of sensors and feedback, techniques used to analyze the signals output by the sensors, strategies to map sensor variables to sound generation parameters, and sound synthesis techniques. The semantical point of view, on the other hand, focus on: role of the users, types of actions/gesture/postures to be used for the interaction, goal of the interaction, and role of sound output in the interaction context. We analyze each perspective in detail considering two case studies: interactive sound installations and interactive instrument performances.
