Images of donors in the Buddhist art of Eastern India
Résumé
This paper is connected to two earlier papers published in 1985 and 1995 considering the representation of human donors at the bottom of religious images from Bengal (West Bengal & Bangladesh) and Bihar. The present paper is concerned with some specific aspects of the presence of lay donors and monks: inscriptions of donation incised in the lower part of the image; position of the human donors at the bottom of the image, and left or right of the deity. It also deals in detail with a particular type of carving originating from Bodhgaya, illustrating a scene of religious ritual, and its influence in Southeast Bengal (Bangladesh).
