Translation alignment and lexical correspondences : a methodological reflection

Résumé

This article discusses the notion of bilingual alignment at word level. Considering the two relative criteria of alignment, namely one-to-one correspondence and monotony, we show that these requirements could be met only partially at word level, and that the concept of alignment is no more valid to describe the translation activity at sub-sentence level.
