On continuum kinematics of volumetric growth

Abstract : A continuum model for a body whose elements are distinguishable although its mass is not conserved is defined using a balance law for a property that characterizes it. A variational formulation of the balance law for the characterizing property is interpreted in various ways and is used in order to define growth formally.
