Simulation of acoustic emission sources: identification of relevant parameters to describe material damage mechanisms

Résumé

Acoustic Emission (AE) testing is a non-destructive evaluation method which is especially suited for structural health monitoring in composite materials. The objective of the present study is to quantify the impact of the propagation media on AE signal's characteristics. As a consequence, it will be easier to determine which parameters are the most relevant to describe the damage mechan- ism. To this end, using finite element simulation software ABAQUS®, artificial sources representing AE sources were generated on the material surface. The results were compared to ex- perimental data.
