Comparison of the magnetization of MgB2 and YBCO bulks at different temperatures for electrical engineering applications

Résumé

Studying bulk superconductor magnetization is useful within the framework of electrical motors or levitation. The recent developments in preparing high temperature superconductor (HTS) bulk parts with high critical current density make this material particularly promising for these applications. In this paper experimental study of HTS bulks magnetization is presented. A comparison of magnetization of two kinds of HTS, MgB2 and YBCO, is done at different temperatures. The goal of this study is to know the best magnetization/cost ratio at different temperatures for electrical engineering applications. The principle of our experiment is to applied a magnetic field, produced by superconducting coil, to a HTS cylindrical bulk from 0 to maximum magnetic field Bamax then from Bamax to 0 at very low speed. During this cycle a Hall probe measures the magnetic field at the centre of HTS bulk to know the physical behavior of the HTS bulk and its final magnetization at the end of the cycle. A pulsed magnetization is also shown.
