Abstract : In this article we propose an interpretative reading of pedestrians’ movements in public spaces. Our own video recordings made in daytime Paris have allowed us to catch the most fleeting and banal micro-practices of everyday life, relative to ordinary urban micro-spaces and urban design details. Applying E. Goffman’s concept of « vehicular units », we have identified logics of mobility and place as adopted by the bodies in movement of Parisian pedestrians. We will see that urban design, urban signs and social rules govern behaviour within public space; however, pedestrians follow singular paths, which is common to any human body in movement. They invent mobility and occupation tactics relying on all the possibilities offered by their surroundings.
