The Llambí Company, Barcelona: a unique relationship between a manufacturer of blinds and shutters and architects

Résumé

Llambí is a company based in Catalonia. It designs, builds and fits slatted shutters. The destiny of this company was radically influenced by a thirty-year long cooperation with Catalan architect Josep Antoní Coderch (José Antonio Coderch) (1913-84), from the late 1940s. In 1953, the building that Coderch designed for Barceloneta, featuring fullyshuttered facades by Llambí, marked a milestone in the history of Spanish architecture. It was the first building in Barcelona in which the structure and the envelope were fully dissociated. It also marked a turning point in the history of the Llambí firm, which, from this project on, developed a specific way of working, by experimenting on real projects (developing prototypes, patenting ...) and by establishing a cooperative working approach between the firm and architects. After the Coderch period, Llambí went through a period of industrialization and introduction of mass production, working as a subcontractor, as was common in the commercial climate in Spain at the time. At the height of an era of great Spanish projects (e.g. the Barcelona Olympics in 1992), Llambí's international development and growth reintegrated the co-design methods they had developed with Coderch. With the increasing importance of environmental issues in the 2000s, a young generation of architects, familiar with the architectural history of their country, started seeking the expertise of Llambí. This paper relates the history of the special relationship that links the company with Coderch and assesses its role in the evolution of shutter design over the past 60 years in Catalonia
