The notion of a spherical angular spectrum leads to the representation of an electromagnetic wave as a superposition of spherical waves. It provides a direct way of interpreting the role of the pupil in the theory of image formation. The spherical angular spectrum propagation takes the same form as the field amplitude transfer from a spherical emitter to a spherical receiver.
