Autorité fictionnelle et description dans le roman autodiégétique du second dix-huitième siècle

Abstract : In the novel, fictional authority relies above all on the maintenance of a " pragmatic verisimilitude " (Cécile Cavillac) assuring the reader that the narrator is knowledgeable, competent and reliable. In the second half of the French eighteenth century, the constraints imposed by this verisimilitude persists but also undergoes certain changes. This is evident in the decriptive practice that can be found in the novels, descriptions being sometimes a threat, but sometimes also a supporting element, to fictional authority. Based on the descriptive practice that can be observed in novels by Castilhon, Nerciat, Tiphaigne de la Roche and Diderot, this contribution aims to study this ambivalence and to show the relation between description and narration in the eighteenth century novel.
