Managerial competency needs analysis : Exploring the concept in the hospitality industry

Résumé

Up until now time research analyzing the needs of managerial competencies, as applied to the Vietnamese hospitality industry, has been unavailable. This despite the fact that tourism competition between countries in Southeast Asia is intense (Aznam 1992; Combes 2002/2003; Tirasatayapitak 2005; Vo Thanh 2008). From a management point of view, determining tourism managers' needs in managerial competencies is quite relevant since it allows necessary, corrective actions to be taken, making those managers more efficient and competitive. This article aims to cover a double objective: to identify the eventual needs of managerial competencies, and to offer recommendations relative to the content of hotel managers' training programs in Vietnam. The results show that competencies in marketing and market analysis, economic-financial management, computing, foreign languages, and consumer profile and behavior are still the competencies coveted by managers.
