Instability of hollow polymeric microspheres upon swelling

Hollow polymeric microspheres of submicron dimensions are widely used in modern technology [1]. Since such microspheres possess a high light scattering power, they are used, for example, in the paper industry as white pigments and in the production of paintwork materials. The light is most effectively scattered by microspheres with diameters about 400-500 nm and wall thicknesses about 50 nm.
