L'école et le défi ethnique

Abstract : The book is a collective initiative to display the paradigm of ethnic relationships and discuss its relevance to the case of the French education system. It includes theoretical chapters, by Françoise Lorcerie, who elaborates upon a psycho-socio-political understanding of ethnic relationships, derived from Max Weber's ideas. She elucidates the political component of this approach. It conceives nation community as the major political form of current ethnic relationships, and correlatively it places the focus on majority status. Ethnic relationships are not a matter of immigrants, but a matter of relationships between majority and minority groups, in connection with their respective territory status. Lastly, the discussion comes to political philosophy of education, examining whether and how it can take such an analysis into account. Thirteen other chapters are written by experts (J. Bordet, E. Debarbieux, O. Douville, S. Ernst, N. Guenif, S. Morel, J. Perroton, C. Rinaudo, J. Streiff-Fénart, J.-P. Zirotti) or by practitioners (F. Alamartine, F. Berrou, S. Contrepois). They develop or illustrate specific aspects of the psycho-socio-political approach of ethnic relationships on the basis of their respective fieldworks.
