Emprise de la gestion et violence symbolique

Abstract : After two decades of rise of neo-liberalism, the degradation of working conditions has been criticized by many observers: some speak of "workplace violence", focusing on the socio-political dimensions and socio-economic structuring the universe of work. This article is in this perspective and makes it more particular account of the role of managerial dynamics in the exercise of violence at work. The article is based on two emblematical situations of work : the call centers and the implementation of a "total" managerial device , the Balanced Scorecard, in a multinational company. It shows that the managerial violence can be observed at three interconnected levels. At the first level, this violence is the result of macro-political transformations that make overwhelming the introduction and the renewal of managerial devices. At a second level, the violence comes from the way managers locally implement theses devices. Finally, a third level, symbolic violence occurs behind the practices of the different categories of actors. The overlap between these levels leads to a majority of players to adopt an attitude of resignation: it would not be possible to empower management. Such a finding can better target the location and mode of action out of the workplace violence.
