Acquisition de la morphographie entre 10 et 15 ans : le cas du pluriel des formes verbales en /E/

Abstract : Research into acquisition of inflexional verbal forms has raised the following question: should one assume two separate cognitive mechanisms (memory and rules) to control regular verbs and irregular ones? The fundamental debate is presented, followed by a study of 1200 French school-age students (10-15 years old); they took a test which evaluated their mastery of number agreement in /E/ verbal endings. The results show that the subject-verb agreement is overextended. The features of this overextension suggest a rule-based processing. The analysis of the errors made by the students indicates that they conform to the allowed associations between number marks (-ent, -s) and verbal paradigms (-er, ai-, -é-).
