Effect of insoluble materials on salt behavior during creep tests

Multi-stage triaxial creep tests have been conducted on several samples of a rock salt containing a high content of insoluble materials to check its deformational response under high levels of deviatoric stresses and temperatures. The first tests have been performed under the same mechanical and thermal loading to better apprehend the possible scattering of results. The tested samples were broken after the achievement of the three steps of the deviatoric stress during the temperature increase to reach the targeted temperature level. Additional tests confirmed that the increase of temperature leads to the failure along the contact between insoluble and salt. This phenomenon is explained by the difference of thermal expansion between insoluble materials and salt which entails the development of tensile stresses and consequently the failure of the samples.
