Le portrait du " bon fonctionnaire " à l'archipel de Mikyako dans les Ryûkû : Mémoire et genèse d'un " espace étatique "

Abstract : Okinawa islands are characterized by the diversity of local identities, some of them having a remote history related to the formation and evolution of the society of the Ryûkyû Kingdom. Of special interest is the portrait of the persona of the "benefic official", a representation associated to some chiefs of the past of the Miyako archipelago (a peripheral group of islands). The portrait contributes till today to construct local identity by configuring Miyako as an "imagined mini state" belonging to the "imagined social space" constructed by the political ideology in the Early modern period (XVIIe-XVIIIe century). The paper deals with the origins of this representation by analyzing written sources of the XVIIe-XVIIIe century (both from learned and popular origins) and contemporary ethnographic data related to the function of the representation in a long history of mentalities.
