Le portrait du " bon fonctionnaire " à l'archipel de Mikyako dans les Ryûkû : Mémoire et genèse d'un " espace étatique "

Okinawa islands are characterized by the diversity of local identities, some of them having a remote history related to the formation and evolution of the society of the Ryûkyû Kingdom. Of special interest is the portrait of the persona of the "benefic official", a representation associated to some chiefs of the past of the Miyako archipelago (a peripheral group of islands). The portrait contributes till today to construct local identity by configuring Miyako as an "imagined mini state" belonging to the "imagined social space" constructed by the political ideology in the Early modern period (XVIIe-XVIIIe century). The paper deals with the origins of this representation by analyzing written sources of the XVIIe-XVIIIe century (both from learned and popular origins) and contemporary ethnographic data related to the function of the representation in a long history of mentalities.

Cette étude est consacrée à la relation entre identité locale et " espace étatique " dans l'histoire sociale de l'archipel de Miyako dans les Ryûkyû, avec comme objet privilégié le portrait du " bon fonctionnaire " (qui regroupe plusieurs chefs légendaires de l'archipel). L'analyse s'intéresse essentiellement aux origines de cette persona en étudiant les narratives de l'historiographie officielle (XVII-XVIIIe siècle) et des traditions orales (notées par écrit au XVIIIe siècle), ainsi que des données ethnographiques contemporaines (traditions orales et mythico-rituelles). En effet, ce portrait semble jouer aussi un rôle essentiel pour ce qui est de la perpétuation, jusqu'à nos jours, d'une mémoire mythico-rituelle configurant Miyako comme un " mini état imaginaire " au sein d'un espace social reproduisant celui (notamment imaginaire) élaboré grâce à l'idéologie politique au cours du XVIIe-XVIIIe siècle.
