Chapitre 2 - Les origines du conditionnel français

Résumé

This chapter is about the origins of the French conditional. The etymon of the French conditional was formed before the etymon of the French future tense. The French future tense was formed after the pattern of the conditional, not the other way round: morphologically, the conditional is not the product of a fusion of the French future + the imperfect (as often stated), but the product of the fusion of [the infinitive + the imperfect of 'avoir'].
