Biomechanical models to study speech

Résumé

In this paper biomechanical models of speech articulators developed at Gipsa-lab are presented, with a special focus on lips and tongue models. These models are seen as necessary steps toward a better understanding of the motor control strategies underlying speech production. The methodology is explained, and the most recent models are described. Two applications of our modelling approach are presented: the study of the vowel reduction phenomenon associated with an increase of speaking rate and the study of the stability of the tongue motor control during the production of vowel /i/.
