"Paysage" et "Landschaft" : incompréhensions et malentendus entre les géographes allemands et français dans les années Trente.

Abstract : "Paysage" et "Landschaft" : misunderstanding between German and French Geographers at The International geographical Congress of Warsaw 1934 and Amsterdam 1938. German and French Geographers have met together at the International geographical congress of Warsaw 1934 and Amsterdam 1938 for the first time after the First World War. They have argued about the geographical landscape concept. Nevertheless the reports of the congress expose the tensions, the mutual lack of understanding and the chaotic structure of the communication. The backgrounds of the landscape concept were not the same for German and French geographers. What was the reason of this misunderstanding ? Were the geographers aware of it ? What did it mean ? To answer these questions, we will first study the context of communication between French and German geographers at the International Geographical Congress. Second we analyse the core of the misunderstanding, that is to say the landscape concept. "Landschaft" does not mean "paysage". Through common ideas, French and German geographers did not always agree. Translation problems as well as terminology problem were not the only reason. An another key factor could be a difference of paradigm : on one hand, the landscape concept, which was used by the German geographers since the end of the nineteenth century and which was misappropriated by the nazis, and on the other hand, a french landscape concept, which was mostly used in an aesthetical way and not very well analysed.
