The Bejewelled Buddha from India to Burma

Résumé

Study of a particular aspect of the Buddha iconography, where the Buddha wears a crown and jewellery from c. 100 BC till AD 1200 in India and at a later period in Southeast Asia. Since the very beginning of South Asian Art history the tendency was present to consider the Buddha as a ruler. The meaning to be given to this type of image changed in course of time, deeply interrelated with the history of the Buddhist community and its situation within the Indian society and its relation to the political power.
