Data in speech production: experimental setups, articulatory, kinematic and aerodynamic measurements, analyses and interpretations

Résumé

The aim of this tutorial will be to introduce the attendants to articulatory, kinematic and aerodynamic measurements, to the analyses of these data, and to their interpretations. In a first part, basic information will be provided about some of the experimental setups that are classically used to study speech production: Electromagnetic Articulography, Electropalatography, Video, ultrasounds as well as a piezoresistive pressure transducer for analyzing aerodynamics. Special attention will be devoted to aspects related to calibration, systems of reference, noise filtering, and experimental protocols. In a second part, the measures that can be extracted from the different kinds of data will be presented: tongue geometry, articulatory positions, lip area, amount and loctation of tongue/palate contacts, , intra oral pressure, as well as kinematic parameters such as velocity zero-crossings, peaks velocity, velocity profile asymmetries, acceleration, interarticulatory phasing. Aspects related to time normalization and comparison between time varying signals will be also presented. In the last part of the presentation, advantages and disadvantages of the respective measures will be discussed. Moreover, theoretical considerations will be addressed which relate to the potential use of these measures in studying speech motor control, speaker specific strategies, pathological behavior or phonetic universals.
