Le passage du papier au numérique : le cas du manuel scolaire

Abstract : This chapter questions main characteristics, changes and impacts of textbooks upon processes of documentation conception and use by teachers. Textbook is specific, on the one hand according to its intended audience (students, teachers and even parents) and on the other hand as a source and a possible support of activities, which can occur in or outside schools. For that reason, available instrumentation for school activities has a direct impact upon textbook contents and organisation. Partial or total digitalization of textbooks, their possible splitting in independent and more or less connected resources lead to modify the relationship teachers and students may have with them. This chapter will explore these issues, focussing on mathematical education, showing impact of instrumentation changes and will try to enlighten current evolutions. It provides some landmarks concerning textbook history and current trends in international research, discussing the notion of pedagogical text, and focuses on mathematics mainly in France, questioning possible new roles of teachers towards educational resources.
