Le monde franc et les Vikings

This research establishes a line of questioning on the possible mechanisms at play in the integration of Vikings into autochthonous societies where they settled, focussing on cases such as agreements concluded between Vikings and natives, the modes of pacification employed, the strategies of compromise, the use of go-betweens between Franks and Scandinavians, proposing a model of integration. It develops the concept of "accommodation", which here relates to the process of regulating relations between two groups and to strategies of coexistence, relevant for addressing the phenomena of compromise and adaptation, in different contexts, of a society confronted with a population settling on its territory. This work emphasises the necessity of first analysing the approach of the contemporary sources and introducing the line of questioning raised by recent work on alterity and representation, the narrative of peace and war, the settlements of conflicts and their rituals, and the image of the king or the pacifying prince. The investigation reveals the prominence of diplomatic relations between the Franks and the Scandinavian kingdoms, especially Denmark; the interaction between the Frankish and Scandinavian elites; the career of Scandinavians visibly well integrated in the Frankish world; the existence of a model of integration offered to foreign, in this case Scandinavian, elites; the role of mediators and go-betweens between the regnum Francorum and Scandinavia (Franko-Saxon aristocracy, missionaries); and the opening, to Scandinavian chiefs, of the game of competition among elites for the circulation of wealth, of honores, possibly the Königsnähe. It demonstrates the need to combine the results of this investigation with observations from other fields or societies and to enrich them with evidence from other sources or from studies in other social sciences.
Cette recherche établit un questionnement sur les mécanismes qui ont pu jouer, ou non, en faveur de l’intégration des Vikings dans les sociétés autochtones autour de dossiers tels que les accords conclus avec les Vikings, les modes de pacification employés, les stratégies de compromis, les intermédiaires entre les Francs et les Scandinaves, l’existence éventuelle d’un modèle d’intégration. Elle développe le concept d’ « accommodation » qui se rapporte ici aux processus de régulation des relations entre deux groupes et aux stratégies de coexistence entre ces derniers : il est apparu pertinent pour aborder les phénomènes de compromis et d’adaptation, dans des contextes différents, d’une société confrontée à une population dont elle a envisagé l’installation sur son territoire. Ce travail insiste sur la nécessité d’analyser au préalable le regard porté par les sources contemporaines et l’ouverture du questionnement permis par les travaux récents portant sur l’altérité et les représentations de l’autre, la narration de la paix et de la guerre, sur les règlements des conflits et leurs rituels, sur l’image du roi ou du prince pacificateur. L’enquête fait ressortir l’importance des relations diplomatiques entre les Francs et les royaumes scandinaves, notamment le Danemark ; l’interaction entre les élites franques et nordiques ; la carrière de Scandinaves visiblement bien intégrés dans le monde franc ; l’existence d’un modèle d’intégration proposé aux élites étrangères, ici nordiques ; le rôle des médiateurs et les intermédiaires entre le Regnum Francorum et la Scandinavie (aristocratie franco-saxonne, missionnaires) ; l’ouverture, à des chefs scandinaves, du jeu de la compétition entre les élites pour la circulation des richesses, des honores, voire pour la Königsnähe (« proximité royale »). Il ressort la nécessité de confronter les résultats de l’enquête aux observations conduites sur d’autres terrains ou sociétés et de les enrichir à partir d’autres sources ou à partir d’objets d’études venus d’autres sciences sociales.
