Une perspective anthropologique sur l'infanticide : la notion de personne en Nouvelle-Guinée

Based for the most part on ethnographical literature dealing with New Guinea, the paper argues that any anthropological analysis of infanticide in a given group cannot be pursued without paying attention to the mental representations people have on personhood and to access to health services and contraceptive methods women can get. In this world area, a newborn is not considered a member of society, nor even a human being, notably because he or she has not yet developed the capability to enter into relation and communicate with others. Neonaticide is thus not taken as morally reprehensible but this does not make it a common and easy-to-accomplish gesture.
Fondé essentiellement sur la littérature ethnographique consacrée à la Nouvelle-Guinée, l'article cherche à montrer qu'une analyse anthropologique du phénomène de l'infanticide dans une société donnée ne peut être menée sans porter attention aux représentations mentales sur la personne et sans connaître les conditions d'accès des femmes aux services de santé et aux moyens de contraception. Dans cette région du monde, un nouveau-né n'est pas considéré comme un membre de la société, ni même tout à fait comme un être humain, notamment parce qu'il n'a pas encore développé d'aptitude à entrer en communication avec autrui. Le néonaticide n'y est donc pas considéré comme moralement répréhensible ; il n'en est pas pour autant un geste banal et facile à accomplir.
