TÉLÉDÉTECTION ET GESTION DES CATASTROPHES NATURELLES : APPLICATIONS À L'ÉTUDE DES INONDATIONS URBAINES DE SAINT LOUIS ET DU RAVINEMENT LIÉ À L'ÉROSION HYDRIQUE À NIORO-DU-RIP (SÉNÉGAL)

Abstract : This paper summarizes two remote sensing and GIS applications in natural disaster management, through urban floods in Saint Louis and water erosion and related gullying in the town of Nioro du Rip (Senegal).Mapping potential of optical and radar data has been assessed in the context of flood disaster in Saint Louis. Significant results have been achieved that have helped build a flood-dedicated GIS, as a decision support tool for authorities. Other water-related disaster of concern is water erosion which is responsible of soil gullying, losses of lands for agriculture and collapse of infrastructures and houses. Water erosion assessment in Nioro du Rip is based on a qualitative analysis of the USLE factors (Universal Soil Loss Equation factors). DEM-derived topographic data combined with rainfall erosivity and soil erodability was used to derive sensitivity water erosion maps. Finally, landcover maps derived from SPOT-4 HRV imagery can be integrated to sensitivity erosion maps in order to delineate erosion risk areas.
