3D numerical model of electromagnetic heating in hyperthermia therapy

Résumé

A three-dimensional coupled electromagnetic-thermal numerical model is presented. It is used to calculate the temperature distribution in the tissues during radio frequency or microwave hyperthermia treatment. The numerical specific absorption rate distribution in the patient is first computed by solving the wave equation using the finite element method with first order edge element. The temperature distribution is then calculated by substituting the specific absorption rate into the bioheat equation. The temperature calculations are realized on the same mesh than electromagnetic simulations. The validation of thermal model is presented, numerical results are compared with analytical solution on spherical geometry. As example, this coupled model is used to predict the temperature distribution in a patient during a 433 MHz interstitial hyperthermia therapy.
