Comparer Euromed aux autres « Régions Nord-Sud »

Abstract : The goal of the paper is to show how relevant it is to analyse the European economic development in its acurate dimension, that is including Eastern and Southern neighbours. The comparison with the two other great Norh-South regions, Northern America (encompassing Mexico) and East Asia, shows that Europe underrates and misuses its developing peripheries. Yet, Mediterranean neighbourhoods could be a substantial contribution to European growth. Nevertheless, the paper underlines that the part of the Southern Mediterranean in Europe's trade decreases, which contrasts with the intense East Asian trade integration; and that there still are very few transmediterranean corporate networks, whereas such productive networks are the main strength of the American and the East Asian regions. Last, as far as man mobility is concerned, and despite the traditional Mediterranean cultural interaction, North-South flows there are by far smaller than what occurs on the Rio Grande.
