Synthesis of asynchronous QDI FSM based on optimized sequencers

Résumé

This paper investigates a new method to synthesize asynchronous QDI FSM. QDI logic circuits are now recognized to be very robust circuits which have interesting properties to deal with nanometric technologies. This study presents a quick overview of the techniques used to implement QDI controllers. The asynchronous FSM synthesis from a HDL is studied and compared to a new method which is basically a direct mapping of the FSM graph. This can be done with sequencers which are small circuits able to manage a short signal sequence. The study demonstrates that, with optimized sequencers, it is possible to get faster and less power consuming FSM circuits. The method is illustrated by a simple example which has been designed in a 130 nm CMOS process.
